Summer Camp Success

120 Borden and Henryville Elementary students were invited to participate in a two-week long summer camp designed to help students reimagine learning and get a jump start on the upcoming school year. Teachers designed lessons to address social-emotional learning, engage students with STEM activities, and get kids up and moving with engaging opportunities to collaborate with peers as a means of accelerating learning. This is not your typical summer school!Students built camping structures out of rolled up newspaper, told scary stories around classroom campfires, and read in tents. Each student received a new book to take home and was served lunch in the cafeteria before dismissal every day. Students completed crafts, painted, reviewed math facts, and practiced close reading skills. We’ve had a great two weeks with students!

Dietrich, Graduate Successes

Congratulations to Jacob Dietrich, Henryville High School graduate, 2020, on receiving a summer internship with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. Jacob will compete in the 10 -week Coastal Arctic Data Synthesis Virtual Project this summer. According to NASA’s project description, “The internship would contribute to a coastal Arctic data synthesis activity supported by NASA and the U.S. Ocean Biogeochemistry Program in preparation for NASA’s Arctic- Colors field campaign. “Henryville High School is doing an outstanding job preparing students for experiences of all kinds. We are so proud of Jacob, his family and all the educators who have helped him succeed,” said Superintendent Sam Gardner.

Project-based instruction makes learning real (fun) at Henryville High School.

Students in the Introduction to Business Program made their final project-based learning presentations on May 19, 2021 at Henryville High School.

From the first day of class last August, students have worked to create their own businesses. The year-long projects evolved weekly as students created a unique business idea, a business plan, specific financial documents, effective marketing strategies, a SWOT analysis, future goals, and target markets. Students were also asked to find a solution to a problem their businesses might experience. Some of the businesses include a tea shop, a security firm and an online fitness company.

During each stage, students learned a new aspect of their business model and moved towards expansion. In the end, students crafted a complete portfolio of materials, a tri-fold visual representation, a 3-D model of their business idea, and a final oral presentation. This year-long endeavor was student-centered and taught students to find real solutions to real problems, a tool that will serve students well as they one day transition into the work-force. Research indicates that project-based instruction helps create critical thinkers and promotes social learning. It also allows teachers various ways to assess progress. Amy Whitlatch, who teaches the class, said, “I could not be prouder of these students and their efforts.”

Congratulations to Connie Mull, Joe Oakes and Maranda Boggess. Co-winners in the Teacher-of-the-Year category were Joe Oakes, Borden High School Teacher, and Connie Mull, former Henryville Elementary Teacher.

Connie Mull, who sadly passed away in January, had been with the district since 1995. Christy Nunn, Henryville Elementary Principal, said, ““How do you explain what Connie Mull has achieved and how her love for students and learning will transcend time? Connie Mull began teaching at HES in 1995. One of the first written pieces from an administrator described Mrs. Mull’s teaching career: “Connie has made a wonderful addition to the Henryville program. She advocates for all children and interacts positively with them. She challenges them while assuring their success. She is creative and energetic in her individual and group instruction.” Connie never swayed from that belief. Her classroom was a magical place and how lucky that so many children had the opportunity to experience her passion for education. Connie was serious about her profession.She was serious about moving students from below level to at-level and then beyond grade level in reading and math. As serious as Mrs. Mull was about education, Connie made her seriousness a lot of fun. She said things like, “kiss your brain, firsties” and on dress up days, you could count on Mrs. Mull to bring the fun! She will be missed by so many for a very long time.

Joe Oakes, who moved to Borden from another district in 2018, teaches chemistry, physics, finite math, pre-calculus and AP Calculus. Joe said, “Every student should be celebrated for their success no matter if it is getting an A on an exam or if it is getting a 60 percent on an exam. Every student starts out with different abilities which means we should adjust our goals accordingly. I love my job, and I strive to make sure my students see that through our daily interactions.” Principal Charlie Gardner said this, “Mr. Oakes has been a great addition to our school over the last few years. He is a student-first teacher who always has their best interest in mind. He has a special ability to bring out the best in everyone around him. Mr.Oakes has been instrumental to the success of our new corporation including his contributions to the BHSC virtual program and back on track plan. Additionally, Mr. Oakes serves as a teacher leader in several capacities, including e-learning guidance and expectations, dual credit courses, and technology. Also honored at the banquet was Maranda Boggess, school nurse at Henryville Elementary, who was named classified employee-of-the-year. Christy Nunn, Principal, said, “Maranda was chosen as Henryville Elementary classified employee-of-the-year due to her dedication and her consistently going above and beyond her job, especially this year of social distancing, masking up, contact tracing and quarantines. We have selfishly used Maranda to talk us through the exposures, the dates for quarantine and to explain the difference between a contact and a close contact, again and again…. and again. Maranda has tirelessly called and checked on students and parents. She has made countless close contact calls giving parents the news of quarantine, something that no one wanted to hear in a year that was already stressful for so many people.Maranda has supported our staff with her knowledge to help them maintain a safe environment in their classrooms. Maranda has also supported our sports teams and coaches teaching us cleaning procedures to keep our athletes safe. Maranda is an asset to our school every year, seeing students who bumped their knees to students and staff who are having a medical emergency.
