This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden Elementary School
Jenny Pierce, BES, third grade teacher
Experience: 23 years, all at BES
College/University: IUS
Fun fact: I won several tractor pedal pulls at the Leota Frolic!
Mrs. Pierce loves working and team teaching with Mrs. Misty Ray, and she loves to watch her students grow and experience those "aha" moments. Her heart smiles thinking of the accomplishments of former students. Mrs. Pierce says, "I love seeing what my former students grow up to be. It’s neat seeing Carson Casey coach and teach at Christian Academy. I loved watching AJ Agnew being on the news for saving a person’s life. I feel proud knowing that Zane Stotts and Grace Hall are serving our country and keeping us safe. It’s pretty cool knowing that I was able to be part of their lives for just a moment. This makes my heart smile."
Mrs. Pierce had SEVERAL nominations from the families of current and past students. We can't wait for her to read the kind words families have shared!
Kaitlynn Loy wrote, "Mrs. Pierce worked so hard with our son last year to find a way to make him believe he could succeed. She worked with him on his reading and focusing skills so he was able to pass his reading tests to move to fourth grade (where his current teacher Mrs. Saylor is building on his third grade success by encouraging him and continuing to make him very confident with school). Mrs. Pierce was the turning point for our son's education. And I know I am not the only parent who feels that way."
Another parent, Tracy Beckett, wrote, "My child Lathan is special needs. She has went above and beyond helping him and reaching his needs. I believe that she treats him like she would treat her own children. The communication between her and us as his parents is amazing. She's very professional and knows how to be a third grade teacher!!"
Stacy McCormick shared, "Mrs. Pierce welcomes each child into her classroom and treats them as if they are her own. My child started at Borden in 3rd grade and was lucky enough to start his Borden career in her classroom. She gave him confidence and comfort that he has never had in school before. She is a special human that my entire family is lucky to know. "
Mrs. Pierce, you've spent 23 years impacting families in BHSC communities, and what a reputation of kindness, compassion, and encouragement you have built! Congratulations!

The Indiana Institute on Disability & Community's Center on Community Living and Careers is offering a FREE, virtual or in-person information session on Monday, December 15th from 9 AM to 12 PM ET, and BHSC wants to help remove any potential barriers for our families who would like to hear the information but are unable to coordinate virtual attendance.
A Place of My Own offers important information for any individual with a disability, their families, or caregivers. When people can no longer provide support, adults face sudden changes such as new homes, routines, and caregivers. We welcome you to join us in learning more about residential options, funding, regulations, workforce challenges, and intentional communities. Jim McCarten will facilitate this session. Jim is a special needs attorney and focuses on planning to protect benefits like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid. He advises families and trustees of Special Needs Trusts and is a sought-after speaker for professionals and families alike.
If you'd like to attend virtually but need help setting up on the technology side, BHSC is happy to host you at our central office! BHSC has registered to attend, and we will log in so that anyone in our board room can easily hang out in a common space without having to register separately. You won't even need to bring a device and can watch from ours.
If you plan to attend here at BHSC, shoot Samantha Hurst an email at shurst@bhsc.school or call 812-913-9630 to RSVP by Dec. 12th. If you'd like to sign up to attend virtually from your own space or even in-person, use this link: A Place of My Own - Information Session

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Henryville High School!
Natalie Humble, HHS, music, band, chorus teacher
Experience: 5 years, all at HHS
College/University: University of Louisville
Fun fact: I was in the U of L Marching Band all four years of college, and now I'm on their staff as Drum Major Instructor!
Ms. Humble has no trouble choosing the best part of her work. "My favorite part of my job is being able to see the same students progress from 7th grade all the way through high school. My mission is to teach students they can do hard things, and it's so fulfilling to see when it clicks in their mind!"
The family of Emma and Matthan wrote, ""I'm nominating Ms. Natalie Humble because she has been an extraordinary influence in my children's lives. As their band teacher, she has not only taught music, but has also instilled in them responsibility, discipline, and respect. Ms. Humble has a remarkable ability to see each student as a whole person. She is patient, consistent, and genuinely invested in their growth — both as musicians and as young people."
The family continued, writing, "Under her guidance, my kids have developed a true love for music and a sense of belonging they carry with pride. Band is no longer just an elective; it’s become a source of confidence and identity for them. Ms. Humble goes above and beyond in every way — whether it’s staying late to offer extra help, cheering them on during performances, or simply showing up every day with compassion and dedication. Our entire family has felt the positive ripple effects of her influence. Because of her, my children stand a little taller, work a little harder, and believe more in themselves. Teachers like Ms. Humble don’t just teach music — they change lives."
Ms. Humble, these words speak for themselves. We are so proud to be BHSC alongside you!
From our family to your family. Happy Thanksgiving!

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden High School!
Brittany Allen, BHS, Special Education Teacher
Experience: 2 yrs at BHS, 15 yrs overall
College/University: Morehead State & Purdue Global
Fun fact: I have a Boston Terrier that makes Chewbacca noises at strangers rather than barking, and I absolutely love her for it!
Mrs. Allen LOVES getting to help students recognize their full abilities. "We celebrate victories, no matter the size. You improved from a kindergarten reading level to a seventh grade reading level? Way to go, you awesome reader! You learned to write your first name? Way to build your brain and skills!"
Mrs. Allen was actually nominated by the families of two different students, and we wanted to share their words with her and with the BHSC community!
The family of JP wrote, "Mrs. Allen does an outstanding job supporting, nurturing, and advocating for her special needs classroom. The most important thing she does is to make sure her students are not seen as different, incapable, or incompetent. She goes out of her way to integrate students with the rest of the school in a safe, positive way, bringing awareness to a population that very well could be secreted away in a classroom. As a mother of a child with special needs, I am aware that community is so important to the life of my child. It is important that he has people who recognize him, and are comfortable around him to reach out and help him if he should be alone or in a precarious situation. This is a top concern of mine, and Mrs. Allen is doing the hard work of balancing independence and support. "
Addison's family said, "Mrs. Allen is an amazing teacher. Addie is not only learning life skills such as cooking, laundry, waiting on customers at the coffee cart, and taking money. Academically, Addie makes great progress every year. Last year Addie went from a 3rd grade reading level to a 7th grade reading level."
Mrs. Allen, your impact is huge, and your work does not go unnoticed. We are better because you choose to be part of BHSC!

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Henryville Elementary School!
Sydney Brothers, HES, Kindergarten Teacher
Experience: 2nd year teaching at HES
College/University: IU Southeast
Fun fact: My dream vacation spot is Bora Bora!
When we asked Miss Brothers about her favorite part of her job, she said it's watching students grow - academically, socially, and emotionally. "Seeing them gain confidence in themselves and their abilities is one of the most rewarding parts of my work. I strive to create a classroom environment where every student feels safe, supported, and loved, because I believe that genuine learning happens when students know they are valued," Miss Brothers says.
Miss Brothers was nominated by Heidi's family, who wrote, "Our new kindergartener experienced her first intruder drill and was visibly upset and scared. Miss Brothers comforted her during this time and went the extra mile by speaking with our daughter privately explaining the importance of these drills on an age appropriate level and reminding her that it is her #1 job to keep her safe. She provided her with details that could make the experience better next time such as keeping a flashlight in their safe closet so it isn't so dark next time. She remained professional during such an important time while being sure the needs of our student were met now and in the future. We appreciate the level of care she shows in the classroom, loving our kids like her own!"
Congratulations, Miss Brothers! On behalf of Heidi's family and every other family you impact at BHSC, thank you!

Twenty-two NHS seniors traveled to Scottsville Community Church to pick up a very generous food donation—180 bags of food to support local families. Additional senior volunteers joined in to unload and sort the items for distribution, and Superintendent Dr. Comer jumped in to help as well!
Because of this effort, 60 local families will benefit from this donation. We are proud of our students for giving their time, hearts, and energy to support our community. 🫶

Borden High School English 206 seniors with Mrs. Craft dove into Act I of Macbeth with a Gallery Walk activity—and they crushed it! 🙌
It was their first time trying this strategy to share observations and insights, and they were so engaged they asked if we could do it again. Love seeing students excited about Shakespeare! 🎭📚

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden Elementary School!
Amy Greenwell, BES, Kindergarten Teacher
Experience: 25th year at BHSC, 26 years overall
College/University: IU Southeast
Fun fact: Mrs. Greenwell loves to go to the ocean, but she's afraid of the fish in the water. She does not want them to touch her!
When we asked Mrs. Greenwell about her favorite part of teaching kindergarten, Mrs. Greenwell said, "My favorite part is seeing the smiling faces every day and connecting with each of my students. I love to hear about all of their lives and work with them to be the best they can be. When we are connected, we trust each other and feel safe and that is when we blossom."
Mrs. Greenwell was nominated by Declan's family, who wrote, "Our family moved from Louisville at the end of Declan’s kindergarten year, and our kids started at Borden Elementary right after Spring Break. With only 2 months left of school Mrs. Greenwell informed us that Declan was very far behind where he should be (he only knew about 10 out of 50 sight words) and we had no idea. There was no communication at all from his JCPS teacher. With Mrs. Greenwell’s help we came up with a plan - she would work with him at school, and we would work with him at home, and by the end of the year, just 2 short months he learned over THIRTY sight words. This woman accomplished in 2 months what JCPS didn’t in 7! On the last day of school she even sent home a list of words that he should know by 1st grade. That way we could work with him all summer. "
"What struck me the most is how much she truly cared. If it wasn’t for Mrs. Greenwell, Declan would have continued to struggle and be behind for years. I will never forget what she did for him (whether she realized it or not). It truly solidified that we made the right decision in moving from Kentucky to Indiana. We love Borden and Mrs. Greenwell is a huge reason why. She deserves to be recognized because I’m sure that Declan isn’t the only student she’s gone above and beyond for."
Congratulations, Mrs. Greenwell! Declan's family and all of BHSC celebrates you!
