This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden Elementary School.
Misty Ray, BES, 3rd Grade Teacher
Experience: 28 years at Borden Elementary
College/University: Indiana University Southeast
Fun facts: I have traveled to Russia!
When asked about her favorite part of teaching over the last 28 years, Mrs. Ray responded, "My favorite part of teaching third grade is watching my students grow in confidence and begin to believe in themselves. I love seeing that 'lightbulb moment' when something finally clicks. I'm proud of how much growth my students make throughout the year, not just academically, but in their responsibility, kindness, and willingness to try hard things. Since we are a K-12 campus, I also really enjoy seeing my former students in the hallways at school events and hearing about their successes. It is nice to know that I was a part of their journey. "
Mrs. Ray was nominated for this recognition by a family with a unique perspective - the student's guardian is a colleague from the same campus, which means she also sees Mrs. Ray's daily interactions with students and staff and knows how she impacts the culture of her building, in addition to the specific reason the family of Alexis Montgomery nominated Mrs. Ray.
They wrote, "When Alexis enrolled at Borden, she was struggling academically. Alexis was two years behind in all of her skills. With perseverance, modeling, extra support and extra time, Alexis grew two grade levels during her third grade year. Without Mrs. Ray's support and the constant pushing of Alexis to do her best, I feel she would still be behind today. My girl went from truly disliking to read to loving to read, as she now has the skills to be successful. I am so very grateful for everything that Mrs. Ray did for Alexis."
Another family, who asked to remain anonymous, nominated Mrs. Ray for her efforts to stay in constant communication with them as parents as she teaches their son; yet another parent had Mrs. Ray as his own kindergarten teacher years ago, and he shared that her impact on a kid's life is huge in the most positive way.
What a great legacy of generational impact, Mrs. Ray! Thank you for 28 years of service to the students of this district!

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Henryville High School.
Brad Nifong, HHS, Social Studies Teacher
Experience: 20 years at Henryville High School!
College/University: Indiana University Southeast
Fun facts: I was one of our Special Education teachers for my first 7 years at HHS, I have two incredible daughters, and my wife is also a teacher.
Mr. Nifong's love of history fuels his work with HHS students. "I love teaching United States History because I truly believe it matters. For me, it’s important that every student (whether taking my Ivy Tech dual-credit courses or in the 8th grade ) leaves my room informed enough to become thoughtful, patriotic citizens. Henryville has provided me so many opportunities to impact students in the classroom and through coaching, and I am continually grateful that I get to be a part of our growth."
Mr. Nifong had multiple nominations from three families, including Loren Brent Franz, the family of Grace and Emily Stowell, and the mother of Keegan Lewis.
Mr. Franz wrote, "Daniel, my grandson, has not done well in all his classes. He absolutely does not talk about school unless he’s forced. The exception to this is U. S History! Daniel frequently brings up his experiences in Mr. Nifong’s class and the unique ways that he teaches history in a fun and creative way. Daniel is excited about learning in Mr. Nifong’s class, and this is a first."
The Stowell family wrote, "He has been a positive influence in our daughters' lives at school and as a coach. He provides a safe, encouraging environment, and challenges them to be their best selves. This has allowed our girls to blossom and show their personalities with confidence and self-esteem in themselves."
Keegan Lewis's mother wrote, "I am nominating Brad Nifong as a featured teacher because of the remarkable impact he has had on our son this year. Our son has always been a strong student and generally enjoys school, but as an 8th grader this year, he is coming home energized and eager to talk about Mr. Nifong’s history class. History was not a subject he previously gravitated toward, yet he is now excited to share what he is learning and even brings projects home to continue working on them. Mr. Nifong has an incredible ability to bring learning to life in his classroom, and that enthusiasm has sparked a genuine curiosity and excitement for learning in our son. And for anyone who has been around a middle school student recently, sparking interest and excitement in anything is a large task."
Mr. Nifong, thank you for choosing to make a difference at BHSC!

Morgan Cope, BHS, Art
Experience: 20 years at BHS!
College/University: DePauw University
Fun fact: I originally wasn't planning on being a teacher. I wanted to work in an art gallery and interned in NYC in college.
For Mrs. Cope, identifying her favorite part of her job is easy. "I really enjoy connecting with students, teaching them about art, and seeing them do things they didn't think they could achieve. I’m incredibly proud of the artwork my students produce, but I’m just as proud of the relationships we build."
The family who nominated Mrs. Cope asked to remain anonymous but shared that "Mrs. Cope helps us in her classes with what she teaches, but she also works really hard to connect with other students who are not in art classes during study hall so that she can help them. She will work with us on any of our classes, even when they aren't classes she teaches." Mrs. Cope is also a class sponsor, sells tickets at basketball games, and calls the office to make sure someone checks in on kids who are having a rough day.
Mrs. Cope, thank you for being real, being kind, and making sure everyone feels like they belong!

Rebekah Soloe, HES, 3rd grade
Experience: 2 years at BHSC
College/University: Ball State
Fun fact: I am very interested in historical artifacts, and I love to visit museums.
Mrs. Soloe says her favorite part about teaching is "getting to see my students’ confidence grow as they learn new things and realize what they can do. I love the everyday moments of laughter, curiosity, and excitement that make our classroom feel like a family and community. Those little wins throughout the day are what make this work so rewarding."
Parent Morgan Neeley nominated Mrs. Soloe and wrote, "She is an amazing teacher! My daughter was in her class the first year she was at Henryville, and we absolutely loved her! She’s amazing!"
Mrs. Soloe, thank you for the impact you have on our students at BHSC!

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden Elementary School
Mindy Sifflard, BES, 1st grade
Experience: 13 years at BES; 17 years overall
College/University: Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus
Fun fact: I have been to 11 different countries!
Ms. Sifflard says her favorite part about teaching is "building relationships with students that extend beyond our classroom. I love being able to have former students say hi and work in my classroom. "
Parent Alissa Akers-Lanham nominated Ms. Sifflard with these words, "My story is unique in that Mindy is a first grade teacher at Borden Elementary, and she’s a wonderful one! However, my nomination stems from my junior at Borden High School. This will be the second year that my daughter, Lilly, has had the privilege to be the cadet teacher in Mindy’s classroom. Not only has she helped shape the future of Lilly’s aspirations with her inspiring classroom presence, she has also shown Lilly the true value embodied in being a teacher. Mindy’s reach goes far beyond the classroom and she will rally for all her students -past, present, future, and even those that are her cadets! She truly goes above and beyond the call of duty, and our family is blessed by her kind, generous, and loving soul."
Ms. Sifflard, thank you for choosing to build connections that go beyond your classroom at BHSC!

BHS students don't just study history—they stepped into it on Tuesday!
In Mrs. Craft’s English class, students participated in a powerful WWII-era simulation examining one of the most consequential decisions in modern history: whether President Truman should authorize the use of the atomic bomb. Working in teams, students researched real historical options considered in 1945, developed evidence-based arguments, and presented their positions as if they were members of Truman’s cabinet.
Students didn’t simply present—they questioned one another, pressed for clarification, and responded thoughtfully, just as advisors would have done in the room where history was shaped. Many spoke clearly and with conviction, demonstrating deep understanding of their research and the gravity of the decision before them.
This is what meaningful, authentic learning looks like: critical thinking, civil discourse, collaboration, and the courage to defend ideas with evidence. Well done to our students—and to Mrs. Craft for facilitating the experience.

"Molly does so much for our students, staff, and families. She’s known for building strong relationships and making kids feel safe and supported. She’s always right where she’s needed; meeting with students, popping into classrooms, and working with teachers to help them solve problems.
In addition to leading our ROX program, Molly supports initiatives ranging from bullying prevention and student empowerment to crisis response, family support, and academic/behavior interventions. She spends countless hours in classrooms teaching lessons and helping students build skills that carry over into every part of school life.
Molly is a team player and a vital member of our student and family support team. "
We appreciate you, Mrs. Tonnies!

"This week, we’re giving a huge THANK YOU to Ms. Pendleton, our BES school social worker! From her morning arrival greeting to hosting lunch bunch groups, her compassion, dedication, and tireless support help our students feel safe, heard, and ready to learn every single day.
We are so grateful for the heart you bring to Borden Elementary and the difference you make in the lives of our students and families! Thank you, Ms. Pendleton—we appreciate you today and always!"
